The Desire For Google's Self Driving Vehicle

No accidents reported thus far for the self driving car.

Google Self Drive
Google's efforts to bring a self driving car have made it to another milestone. And it is one that shows just how viable the idea of cars driving themselves really is. They are reporting they have completed over 300,000 miles of testing the cars without a single accident. The only accident that one of their self driving vehicles sustained was when someone took it off the computer and was diving it themselves. That is quite a feat to accomplish and shows us that this will be coming in the future.

Google started their tests with the Toyota Pruis and as you can see by the picture have upgraded to the Lexus RX450h which they have added to their fleet. While most of us have never seen one of the Google self driving vehicles, we can expect them to become more visible as they start to expand their testing in other areas. As they are reporting from the Official Blog, they are now moving the cars into day to day usages. This includes being used for the daily commute to work for some employees.

They will also be expanding the testing to other areas to make sure that it can handle things like driving in snow, which could pose some problems. They also need to deal with day to day issues such as the numerous construction projects we see around California. There are probably a number that you can think of as well which they will need to test.

How long it will be before all of us may have the ability to have one of these self driving cars is not known. There is still a lot of testing which is going to have to happen, along with at least a million miles of testing in all kinds of conditions without any mishaps by the cars. And that is a big challenge to prove out this new technology which Google is working on.

We know that it will be at least 3 to 5 years before they are going to start talking about selling or leasing this kind of technology to the public. We know that this will definitely reduce accidents and make the roads safer when large numbers of them are on the road. But, until that time, we can only dream.

Wonder when Google is going to start taking pre-orders?
