How many times do you make sure that your smartphone or laptop is secure when you walk away from your desk at work. Probably every time. But how much thought do you give to the USB stick that you carry around with you and just left laying on your desk?. And more than likely, there is some important information contained on it which you do not want others to look at. But there is no hardware lock to secure your USB stick. Software to lock a USB stick looks to be fairly easy to break. The real solution is to use a hardware lock to protect that USB stick you carry around with you.
One solution is the Corsair Flash Padlock 2 which comes with 256 bit hardware encryption to protect you and the data. On these, you have the ability to enter a 4 to 10 digit pin to protect access to the USB stick. As with most smartphones which have a standard 4 pin access, this provides for a variety of different lengths or combination when you pick the pin you want to use. And you can set a master pin in addition so that there is always an access method. They have placed a rubber case around this secure USB stick making it more durable and another layer of physical protection.
The actual numbers you press do not stick out and will not get damaged or accidentally triggered if bumped or dropped. In fact, they are part of the molded rubber case so that nothing will leak inside, thus protecting the USB. So, what is there to stop someone trying to guess the pin? After 5 incorrect attempts to gain access, it locks the Corsair for 2 minutes and blocks all attempts until that time has expired. Not bad as another layer to protect your USB stick.
What happens if I forget my PIN? The Flash Padlock has an option to let you reset it back to the factory default options. And if someone takes your Padlock and does a reset, it will not do them any good. A factory reset wipes everything off the USB stick, so there is nothing for them to gain access to at that point.
This seems like a pretty good solution to adding another layer to protect your USB stick. You can pick up the 16 GB version through Amazon for $39.13.
